Kiro Cancellation: What Happens to Remaining Credits?
Cancel or downgrade an individual Kiro plan with the correct billing-cycle timing, and separate expiring plan credits from retained purchased add-ons.
Direct answer · individual self-serve billing
Cancel the subscription; keep the balance categories separate
Current individual Kiro self-serve cancellation moves to Free at the next calendar month. Purchased add-ons remain available until their original expiry; included credits do not roll over.
This path covers individual subscriptions using social login or AWS Builder ID. AWS-managed enterprise subscriptions require their own administrator and billing terms. Refundability is Unknown — unresearched: the cancellation, downgrade and add-on instructions reviewed here do not establish a refund rule.
Before and after the billing-cycle boundary
| Balance or access | After requesting cancellation mid-month | At the next calendar month |
|---|---|---|
| Current paid plan | Remains active through the end of the current month. | Moves to Free; monthly subscription charges stop from that point. |
| Included plan credits | Remain part of the current plan's allocation; usage still consumes them. | Unused included credits do not roll over. Use the new plan's allocation. |
| Purchased add-ons | Remain subject to consumption and their original purchase expiry. | Unused add-ons remain available until expiry. Cancellation does not renew their lifetime. |
| Paid-plan downgrade | Old tier remains through month end. | Lower tier takes effect; purchased add-ons carry over. |
Add-ons expire 12 months after purchase. Plan credits are used first, then the earliest-expiring add-on pack. The IDE/CLI total can combine both balances, so a single displayed total cannot tell you what survives the reset.
Cancellation procedure
- Identify the account's sign-in method and current plan. Record included usage and each purchased pack's expiry; do not rely on the combined total alone.
- In Kiro, select your profile → Manage Plan. In the browser, choose Update subscription → Kiro Free → Continue, review the details, then Confirm.
- Check that the scheduled destination and next billing cycle are correct. A paid downgrade follows the same flow with the chosen lower tier.
- After the boundary, verify Free or the lower tier and the retained purchased balance. Escalate a discrepancy to Kiro billing support with the account and purchase records.
Retention does not grant new purchase eligibility. The add-on purchase documentation restricts purchases to paid tiers; the cancellation page separately preserves existing unused add-ons. Do not promise that a Free account can buy another pack.
Derived scenario: if you cancel during September, the current paid tier lasts through September and Free starts with the October billing cycle. An unused purchased pack survives only until its original expiry and can still be consumed. The cancellation itself is not a documented refund or an extension of that pack.
For deciding whether to buy more capacity before cancelling, use upgrade versus add-on economics. Current plan amounts remain on Kiro pricing.
