Two-tool subscription decision

Codex vs Claude Code: Plans and Limits

Codex Plus and Claude Pro have the same listed monthly price, but their allowances are not interchangeable. Choose around the subscription you already use, the limit you actually hit, and how you want to pay for additional capacity.

Derived Neither equal prices nor matching multiplier labels establish equal usable output. The underlying workloads and allowances differ; no usage-per-dollar winner can be calculated from these records.

Which constraint should decide?

Already paying for a supported plan

Derived Start the evaluation with the coding access included in that subscription. Test whether its existing allowance supports your normal work before adding a second subscription.

Codex offers ChatGPT-plan access; Claude Code offers Claude-plan access. The Codex and Claude Code records list the covered interfaces.

Repeatedly running out of capacity

Derived Identify a session limit, weekly limit, or separately billed API limit first. A larger subscription session allowance does not prove that the other constraint will disappear.

Check the Codex Plus/Pro rules and Claude Pro/Max rules before comparing upgrade costs.

Occasional work beyond the allowance

Derived Compare optional extra usage with the additional recurring subscription charge. A break-even point in coding tasks is Unknown because consumption varies and no matched workload measurement is available.

Using an API key

Fact API/provider access is separately billed for these tools. Derived Compare provider rates and account limits for that path; the subscription table above cannot price it.

Derived Codex Plus is a better fit if you need official per-model five-hour ranges and dashboard/CLI reset visibility. Claude Pro is a better fit if Chat and Claude Code must share one subscription pool and you want account-assigned weekly reset visibility. Neither side wins on a converted message score.
